Latin America is expected to see a 21% increase in Animal Protein Consumption

From November 12 to 15, 2024, Punta del Este, Uruguay, hosted the largest poultry conference in Latin America—OVUM 2024. Drawing over 3,500 participants from across the region and beyond, this event brought together industry leaders, producers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of poultry and egg production. With over 150 exhibitors showcasing innovations, and services, the conference was a resounding success.

One of the key highlights was the presentation by Nan-Dirk Mulder, Senior Global Specialist for Animal Protein at Rabobank. He noted that after several volatile years, the poultry and egg sectors in most Latin American countries are now performing strongly. Demand remains robust, supply remains tight, and feed costs have decreased compared to the peaks of two years ago—factors that are driving renewed investment and optimism.

Mulder highlighted several key trends shaping the industry:

  • Expansion & Modernization: Despite challenges with breeding stock supply, there is a rising focus on expansion, modernization, and industry consolidation.
  • Regionalization: Many companies are expanding operations across the region, while foreign investors are increasingly interested in Latin America’s poultry potential.
  • Growth Projections: Over the next decade, Latin America is expected to see a 21% increase in animal protein consumption, with poultry leading at 27% and eggs at 25%. Growth hotspots include Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and Central America, driven by population growth and changing dietary preferences.

Differences in per capita consumption were also highlighted. Poultry has become the preferred protein across most Latin American countries, including traditionally beef-centric markets like Argentina and Brazil. Additionally, countries like Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia boast some of the highest egg consumption rates globally, while others, such as Chile and Peru, are expected to experience significant growth.

The event seamlessly combined technical discussions with a vibrant commercial exhibition. Participants enjoyed insightful talks on industry challenges and innovations while exploring the latest advancements on display. The conference atmosphere was enriched by traditional dance performances, diverse gastronomic offerings, and the notable presence of Uruguay’s President, Luis Lacalle Pou.

Set against the stunning backdrop of a modern coastal metropolis, OVUM 2024 demonstrated the strength, potential, and dynamism of Latin America’s poultry industry, setting a promising stage for the decade ahead.
