The Assam government’s decision to halt the import of chickens from Bengal has dealt a significant blow to poultry merchants and farm owners, resulting in substantial financial losses. The move comes in response to reported cases of bird flu in neighbouring states such as Jharkhand and Bihar. In an effort to prevent the spread of the disease, Assam has banned the entry of chickens from other states, adversely affecting poultry businesses and farm owners in Bengal. Domestic (Backyard) poultry industry to grow 8-10% in 2023-24 in India
The domestic poultry industry, known as backyard poultry in India, is expected to grow 8-10 per cent in 2023-24, driven by volumes and realisations following stable demand and higher penetration of processed chicken as well as value-added products, said in a report. However, earnings are expected to be volatile owing to fluctuations in the raw material prices particularly maize and limited ability of players to fully pass on cost increases, it said.
