U.S. set about testing bird flu vaccines for poultry after record outbreak

The U.S. government is testing four potential bird flu vaccines for poultry, officials said on Friday, after more than 58 million chickens, turkeys and other birds have died in the nation’s worst outbreak ever. The trials, conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service, are the first step in a lengthy process toward the possible first use of vaccines to protect U.S. poultry from the lethal virus. Bird flu, also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), has killed hundreds of millions of birds around the world, raising…

“Avian influenza vaccination and surveillance in Layers” paper launched by IEC

“The potential for vaccination to play a role in HPAI prevention and emergency management in layer hens has been discussed widely in recent months, as the global poultry industry continues to face unprecedented levels of avian influenza,” said Ben Dellaert, chair of the expert group, adding that the paper will support countries considering vaccination as an additional tool for prevention and emergency management of HPAI in layer hens, and to establish and implement a successful vaccination and surveillance strategy. Corn and soybean global outlook: what is expected for 2031? – Analysis by IEC

In a recent IEC member-exclusive presentation, Adolfo Fontes, gave an informative insight into the future global trends in corn and soybean production. He began by highlighting that over the next 2-3 years, a range of uncertainties will impact agriculture, including: Geopolitical stability Crop profitability and energy crisis Climate change Covid 19 and inflation Looking further ahead to the next ten years, he suggests that world population growth will significantly impact agriculture due to an expected increase in demand for animal protein. It is predicted that by 2031, an additional 71…

China to cut Soymeal use in Animal Feed

China’s agriculture ministry issued a three-year action plan to reduce soymeal use in animal feed as it continues to try to reduce its heavy reliance on soybean imports. The new plan proposes that soymeal ratios in animal feed should be reduced to under 13 per cent by 2025, down from 14.5 per cent in 2022. Authorities in the world’s top soybean importer already issued guidelines in 2021 to its animal feed industry recommending lower soymeal ratios. The new plan would “guide the feed industry to reduce the amount of soybean…

Intrinsic Heat Stability of a Phytase

An additional criterion for a good phytase – Lode Nollet, Huvepharma. Summary The biochemical characterisation of a phytase such as pH profile, pepsin resistance, speed and affinity, can provide information on the potential efficacy of the phytase  in vivo. The focus on improvement of the intrinsic heat stability has been driven by the market and forms part of the selection criteria. Introduction Exogenous added phytase in feed is already in practice for more than 25 years. It is used to liberate phosphorous (P), bound to phytate present in raw materials,…

The implementation of Animal Health Standards through a Data Lens: OIE

The first-ever Annual Report stemming from the Observatory of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) provides an encompassing view on the implementation of international standards on animal health and welfare by its Members.  WOAH international standards provide guidance on a wide range of aspects related to disease prevention and control, animal welfare and veterinary public health. They also contribute to ensuring the safe and fair international trade of animals and animal products. With these goals in mind, our Organization regularly draws on the latest advances in science to make sure that…

Criteria for selecting a Fast Phytase

Lode Nollet, Global Product Manager Enzymes, Huvepharma What are the criteria to select a good phytase? Why select the fastest phytase? The importance of pH profile, pepsin resistance and speed (PPS) has shown to be critical to yield a fast phytase with reliable matrix values and superdosing properties.  The main reason for using an exogenous added  phytase in feed is to liberate phosphorous (P), bound as phytate, in raw materials. This does not  only lead to a lower feed cost by reducing the amount of added inorganic P, but also…

Eggs are a “Healthy Food” – FDA proposed New Definition

“Eggs are a ‘healthy food,’ according to a new proposed definition released today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ‘This proposed definition is more good news for egg lovers as it affirms the science showing that eggs are an all-around nutrient powerhouse, supplying nutrients such as choline, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids that are necessary for healthy living,’ says Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board. This new proposed definition aligns with current scientific research and the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans by removing the…

Rabobank is Bullish on Poultry despite of higher Feed Cost, operational & Labour challenges

In the recently published Poultry Quarterly Q3 2022: Rabobank shown Bullish Outlook With Strong Demand and Big Operational Challenges for Global Poultry Industry. Report says that Demand is strong, with most countries open after adopting ‘living with Covid’ strategies. These all things are pushing up poultry demand, while global pressure on spending power and high food prices are also leading consumers toward the lowest-priced meat protein: poultry. The biggest challenge for the industry is on the operational side. Feed and energy prices are higher than they have been in many…
